Free online metronome for guitar practice

cat-metronome is a browser metronome with an animated cat to accompany your practice. Adjust the tempo, time signature and subdivisions, set individual beats to accented, normal or silent, and use a practice timer. No account or installation is needed.

How to use the metronome

1. Set your tempo. Select the BPM number to enter a speed from 10 to 300 BPM, or use the slider and + / − buttons.
2. Choose a time signature. Select the time-signature button, such as 4/4, to change the number of beats in a bar. The options include 3/4, 6/8 and 7/8.
3. Choose subdivisions and accents. Open the note button to select 1, 2, 3 or 4 clicks per beat. Tap a beat in the pattern to cycle through accented, normal and silent states.
4. Start practicing. Press Play. On a computer, you can also press Space to start or pause. Open the sound button for Hits or Loops, or the timer button for a stopwatch or countdown.

Try a simple C major scale exercise

Set 60 BPM, 4/4 and one click per beat. Play C–D–E–F–G–A–B–C, one note on each click, then descend. If you can play comfortably, keep 60 BPM and select two clicks per beat to try two evenly spaced notes per beat. Slow down whenever you need more time to place the notes.

Sounds and practice timing

Use Hits for individual metronome sounds. Loops provides backing tracks with a displayed key and recommended tempo range. Choose a track and follow its range when practicing with accompaniment. The timer offers both a stopwatch and a countdown for timed sessions.
